Abstract: Nowadays, modern society

is highly dependent on electrical power

supply. To live & make our life comfort-

able, we use number of appliances/gad-

gets at our residence/office. Because of

this, the demand of electricity consump-

tion is also going high which results in

high electricity bill.

We all want less electricity bill but don’t

know how to reduce the electricity bill

& one question arises from the above

fact is “can we reduce our electricity

bill ? ”. The answer is “yes we can”.

In this article one golden thumb rule of

ARE-R is discussed which will help you

to reduce/control your electricity bill in

residential and commercial buildings.

Key Words: ARE-R (Avoid, Reduce,

Energy Efficient & Renewable (Solar)

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, modern society is highly

dependent on electrical power supply.

To live & make our life comfortable, we

use number of appliances/gadgets at our

residence/office. Because of this, the

demand of electricity consumption is

also going high which results in high

electricity bill.

We all want less electricity bill but don’t

know how to reduce the electricity bill

& one question arises from the above

fact is “can we reduce our electricity

bill ? ”.The answer is “yes we can”.

2.0 THUMB RULE OF ARE-R TO

REDUCE ELECTRICITY BILL

First alphabet “A” means Avoid use of

electricity when not needed/ when not

in use.

Second alphabet “R” means Reduce Use

of Electricity (Use Gadgets Smartly)

Third alphabet “E” means Energy

Efficient (Replacement of Gadgets with

Energy Efficient Gadgets)

Fourth alphabet “R” means Use of

Renewable Energy (Solar Energy).

1. Avoid use of electricity when not

needed/ when not in use.

We mostly do these silly mistakes in our

daily routine life i.e. we switch on lights

/ fans or any other appliances for doing

our work & go away or leave that room

without switching them off. This seems

to be small mistakes but just because of

this, not only our electricity bill goes

high only, but electricity goes waste

also.

FIG.1 LIGHT ON IN EMPTY LIVING

ROOM

Example for the Calculation of waste

of Energy in Bulbs

Suppose we are using two standard

incandescent bulbs of 60 W each in our

living room or any other place. And we

switch ON that incandescent bulb

without any reason/use for 5 hour per

day (for assumption point of view) for

calculating the waste of energy of 1

month.

Wattage of 2 Standard Incandescent

Bulb is switch ON for 1 hour =120 x 1

=120 watt

120 watt of energy is used in just 1 hour.

So, if it is use for 5 hours then this

energy will be =120 x 5 = 600-watt

energy wastage in just 1 day.

Let’s take an average calculation for a

month (30 days) = 600 x 30

= 18000 watts (Means 18 Unit/Month)

Just because of these 2 standard incan-

descent bulbs of living room (only 1

place) , there is energy wastage of 18

Unit/Month & for one year this

becomes 216 Unit/Year.

2. Reduce Use of Electricity (Use

Gadgets Smartly)

One more example, we have a good

habit to Iron our clothes & this can be

avoided in winters especially for shirts

as we cover them with another heavy

cloth like jackets.
